What is happening in our world

AMERICAN FORK, Utah — Monday, August 22, 2016 — Spyder Byte Studio, LLC detected and avoided a credit card scam.

We did not anticipate reporting on an attempted credit card scam this week. But, we want to share our experience with others and, if possible, prevent others from losing valuable time and money from such schemes. Here's the scoop...

Last Thursday, a visitor to this website used the contact form to send the following email.

"Hello. I'm Medina, i would love to know if you can handle website design for a new company, am setting up a restaurant. kindly get back to me ASAP so i can send you the job details. Regards, Medina. medinaver5@gmail.com"

Anyone see the problems with this email? It has all the beginning signs of a scam.

  • Incorrect capitalization
  • Poorly written English
  • Pressure to act quickly

We sent a professional and pleasant reply, but the second email we received from this person confirmed the scam.

"Thank for the quick respond, am very glad to hear you can help with the web design, before sending the web design details i will love to know if you accept credit card for payment, Kindly advise back and i will be happy to send you job details to you as possible.
Regards,
Medina."

Again, we see more signs of a scam email.

  • Missing words (e.g. you, I, soon)
  • Wrong words (e.g. respond vs. response)
  • Incorrect punctuation
  • Payment via credit card being pushed before any project discussion or negotion has taken place

Legitimate companies seeking professional or technical services do not send such unprofessional emails, particulary as a first introduction to another company. If you would like to learn more about how to recognize similar scams you can find similar stories and information in the following links.
